Sight Picture Training from Lena Miculek Boon

Lena Miculek Boon is the daughter of competitive shooting legend Jerry Miculek, and she’s a competitive shooter in her own right. Both of them have extensive instructional videos on YouTube, often appearing together, although Jerry is mostly retired now.

Lena’s latest is this detailed overview on vision, which I highly recommend. Just remember that in real life, her video is made where she’s looking at a camera. You too should use a camera or a mirror to run these exercises; never point a weapon at another human being unless you’re ready to destroy that person, which obviously takes us outside of the training realm.

How to Get Arrested, Tuesday, October 27, 2026, 5:15-6:45, MCPL - Downtown

 WHAT: How to Get Arrested

WHEN: Tuesday, October 27, 2026 5:15-6:45

WHERE: Monroe County Public Library - Main Branch, 303 E Kirkwood, Bloomington, IN

COST: FREE

Like it or not, getting stopped by police with the possibility of arrest is a risk all of us face in an over-policed society, regardless of our choices. Anyone who drives, shops, attends a school or a job, or even sits in a park is likely to be scrutinized by a police officer looking for probable cause. Beyond that, routine exercise of the freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights commonly brings police attention and therefore increased danger of arrest. This seminar can be thought of as Know Your Rights 102. Maybe you already know that you have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney, but how exactly do you make those rights work in your favor? How are police going to react to your assertion of rights? What happens after the cuffs go on? What kinds of "fighting" and "resistance" are wise and which are not? Facing investigation, arrest, and criminal charges is never fun, but you have choices about how you respond to these things as they happen, and some of your choices can make the difference between an experience that is brief and inconvenient, versus an experience that is permanent and life-changing. We will examine those choices in this seminar.

Rice and Beans Workshop, Saturday, October 24, 2026, Southwest MCPL

 WHAT: Rice & Beans Workshop

WHEN: Saturday, October 24, 2026 10:30-5:30
WHERE: Monroe County Public Library - Southwest Branch, 890 W Gordon Pike, Bloomington, IN 47404
COST: FREE

We will be making rice & beans from scratch, feeding participants, and sending people home with food at the end of the day. We have one recipe so far, kindly provided by the good folks at Los Potrillos at 120 E 7th St in Bloomington. We will do at least one more recipe, a vegan gluten-free offering, to meet the broadest possible dietary restrictions. The bulk of our ingredients for this event are being donated by Pantry 279. The event is free and open to the public.  The library requires all participants to sign a waiver and firmly restricts the room to no more than 24 people in the space at a time. Therefore, if you want a guaranteed spot, you must do the following: (1) email me at twestgard@gmail.com saying that you want a spot, and (2) be at the library at 10:30am on 10/24/2026. In the unlikely event we have an overwhelming response, participants who are present in line will be accepted in the chronological order of the email they sent. However, even if you do not make a reservation, please know that our events do not usually fill up, and if people come and go from the event, I will be allowing more people into the room as spots open up. So chances are, if you just show up, likely there will be space for you. Children are welcome to participate so long as they are accompanied by an adult. Please be aware that we will be in a large busy kitchen with hazards such as hot stoves, boiling water, and knives, so you will need to help your child navigate those hazards in an age-appropriate manner.

The library facilities are highly accommodating for people with disabilities, and there are many different tasks needed to complete the food, so don't let a disability prevent you from attending. I'm confident we can find a way to include you, whatever your condition or skill level.

You are not obligated to bring anything, but if you bring a container it may be easier to carry food when you leave. Otherwise we will have some plastic ziplock bags on hand. Our prior events in the Teaching Kitchen have been very social and fun. There's something about preparing food alongside other people that creates a good mood and camaraderie, so please join us and share a meal!

WHAT: How to Change Your Own Oil (Without Creating more Problems)
WHEN: Thursday, October 1, 2026 5:15-6:45
WHERE: Tom Cherry Muffler, 1203 N College Ave., Bloomington, IN 47404
COST: FREE

Changing your own oil is a constitutional right granted to you and all of your fellow Americans by Uncle Sam Adams, but the rational among us pay unscrupulous gallivanters pennies on the dollar to do it instead. We do not take kindly to rational behavior. We understand that knowledge is power, and seek to ordain your hands and brains with the following:

  • The different varieties and locations of oil filters you might encounter when changing your own oil.
  • How to properly remove stubborn fasteners.
  • Identifying differences in drain plugs and gaskets, and how to differentiate between the transmission and engine oil pans.
  • How to appropriately capture and dispose of your used oil.
  • How to safely place a vehicle on ramps (or a parking curb) to easily allow service of its undercarriage.

We will primarily be conducting this class from the workbench using a demonstration rig, and all attendees will be getting their hands on some tools. We will not be actively draining used oil from a vehicle. We will be using one of our personal vehicles to demonstrate appropriate ramp usage. If you have any other questions about basic vehicle maintenance, we plan to hold a short Q&A session afterwards.

Build a Mesh Network Node Workshop: September 10, 2026, 5:30-6:45

WHAT: Build a Mesh Network Node Workshop

WHEN: Thursday, September 10, 2026 5:30-6:45pm
WHERE: The Overlook, 611 W 12th St, Bloomington, IN 47404
COST: Free, but you'll want to buy a kit to assemble ***SEE KITS LISTED BELOW***

Cats, like mesh networks, are ungovernable.

A mesh network is democratized communication technology that passes messages and information node-to-node, free of any centrally controlled or grid based infrastructure. For a small investment of time and money, you can get started with your own node and link into one of the least expensive and most resilient communication networks currently available. Led by Bryce Bookwalter, Disaster Preparedness Coordinator for Monroe County.

Kits we will be using, please buy yours soon so it arrives before the event:

"I really like this kit: Meshnology N39, Meshtastic Heltec V4 LoRa Radio Devices for Sale  It’s about $45 if multiple kits are purchased and it creates a nice device. Plus, there is no soldering required and it is expandable (you can upgrade it later with more stuff). This is the one that will feel most “off-grid-comms”.

This one is the cheapest option, but it works surprisingly well. XIAO ESP32S3 & Wio-SX1262 Kit for Meshtastic & LoRa There is no screen with this one, so everything is done through your phone. This may feel less “alternative” to cell phones since you’re controlling it with your phone but that’s how most of them are now. The build here is super quick too. There is no case provided with this one either."

Pear Canning Intensive with Potluck Lunch: Saturday, September 5, 10:30-5:30

WHAT: Pear Canning Intensive with Potluck Lunch
WHEN: Saturday, September 5, 2026, 10:30am-5:30pm
WHERE: MCPL Teaching Kitchen, Southwest Branch, 890 Gordon Pike, Bloomington, IN 47404
COST: Free, bring some jars to get more food

I have lucked into the full volume of an entire loaded pear tree, plus several apple trees, so I have added a pear canning intensive for Saturday, September 5, 2026 from 10:30am to 5:30pm. I'm planning to spend the entire day there, preserving pears and apples through the water bath method, as is safe with high acid fruits such as these. Additionally, I'll do a volume of white bean and chicken stew, which we can eat for lunch and can the rest using a pressure cooker, so this is your opportunity to learn both methods of canning, and get food. I may do a third recipe, depending on several circumstances but you'll have to attend to see how that works out.

I recognize that not everyone can spend the entire day canning. Come and pitch in, and you'll learn the processes and we'll make sure everyone goes home with at least some amount of food. Stay whatever amount of time you have available. Lunch will happen at approximately noon; if you want to bring food or drink to share, please do but be aware that the library does not permit us to have alcoholic beverages. All that being said, I would love to have at least one or two all-day helpers to get through the amount of food I'm trying to make, with enough time and energy to return the room to the library at the end of the day in good shape.

The maximum number of participants for events in the teaching kitchen is 25. I doubt that we will run into problems with having too many people show up, but if you want to be absolutely sure you have a space, email me your intentions to attend and I will prioritize the first 25 people who contact me. This is a good activity to include children who are old enough to help in the kitchen, so if you have kids, please feel free to bring them along. Remember that this process includes sharp knives and boiling water, so they will need supervision.

I will supply all the ingredients for canning pears and the bean-chicken stew. I am reaching the end of my supply of canning jars, rings, and caps. Everyone will get at least one jar of food, but if you can bring jars, I can send you home with more food. With regard to size, you can simply bring what you happen to have and we will sort it out, or if you have the funds and the opportunity, buy a dozen new jars. Rural King and Menards generally have a good selection. Pints are ideal for these recipes, quarts are also a great choice, and smaller jars can work. Please allow me some leeway to mix and match the jar sizes available to more equitably distribute the finished food.

We will have our Signal expert, as well as several "rounders" to help you tweak your settings and find the controls to get the best performance out of this powerful communications app.
